ITIL Best Practices

By: George May, Sat Dec 6th, 2008

Frameworks offer a broad organizing structure for the required knowledge and skills relevant to particular aspects of IT Service Management. They differ from standards in that they do not typically define mandatory components that an organisation must achieve, but instead provide best practice guidance about what elements "should" be in place in order to improve the capabilities of the IT Service Provider.

ITIL (the IT Infrastructure Library) is the most widely accepted approach to IT service management in the world. ITIL provides a cohesive set of best practice, drawn from the public and private sectors internationally.

IT Service Management (ITSM) derives enormous benefits from a best practice approach. Because ITSM is driven both by technology and the huge range of organisational environments in which it operates, it is in a state of constant evolution. Best practice, based on expert advice and input from ITIL users is both current and practical, combining the latest thinking with sound, common sense guidance.

ITIL has recently undergone a major and important refresh project. It is supported by a comprehensive qualifications scheme, accredited training organisations, and implementation and assessment tools.
